Key Insights
- Approach issues with a systems thinking frame — Organisations get stuck when different teams think about issues in silos, each using a different frame of thinking (determined by an individual’s field of study, job role etc.) or approaching the issue with solutions limited to your own function; but not able to break through the boundaries and think of solutions as a system/ as a whole. The challenge lies in connecting the different areas of responsibility together.
- Concept of Ladder of Inference — Understand that each team member may draw very different conclusions or derive very different meanings from the same experience/ same data/ same observation, as our understandings are informed by our own subjective assumptions, experiences and beliefs. Thus the importance of focusing on the objective data, and also the importance of explaining our own ways of seeing/ how we make sense of information. Also using the tool to be conscious of how we ourselves jump to conclusions based on what we see.
- Approaching an issue with a strength-based approach or a solution-focused frame (thinking about how to get to the final, ideal state) is often more effective than focusing on challenges (i.e. thinking of how to overcome existing problems).
