4 min readSep 6, 2021
Questions that companies must consider:
- How are my investments and operational strategies aligned to the reality of climate change?
- Is my organisation ready for a zero carbon future, and ready to respond to the emerging pressure of stakeholders? If not, what steps do we need take to become ready?
- What new business models or innovative products can my company pursue to reduce emissions, encourage dematerialisation and contribute to degrowth?
- Should catastrophe strike, how will my organisation respond to protect people, communities, supply chains and other assets? Are we prepared for such instances?

Ways businesses can strategically respond to consumer-driven degrowth:
- Degrowth-adapted product design — create products with longer life spans, are modular or locally produced
- Value chain repositioning — exiting from certain stages of the value chain and delegate tasks to their stakeholders, including customers.
- Degrowth oriented standards setting — create a standard for the rest of the industry to follow (e.g. Patagonia & apparel repair)
